Skin Cancers and Moles

What Is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer occurs when damage has occurred to the DNA in your skin cells causing the cells to mutate. The mutated skin cells may multiply and therefore develop into malignant tumors. The following are the possible and most common causes of skin cancer: the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation and tanning beds. Another cause may be due to melanoma genetic factors.

Common Types of Cancer

The three most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and malignant melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type and the least serious but has the possibility of becoming a cancerous lesion if not treated. Squamous cell carcinoma has a higher tendency to metastasize (spread to other areas and organs of the body). Malignant melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer.
